The modern man, according to Bollywood

We are witnessing an interesting phenomenon today where the male body is being ogled at where earlier it was the female. This has given rise to more and more Hindi films showing heroes taking off their shirts and prancing about - the modelling world too seems to thrive on this showcasing of the male body. Is this a sign that women are coming into their own?

Actor model Dino Morea claims: "The male body has always been shown in the modeling world and on the ramp and why not?"

Rahul Dev adds: "I have really no idea how women look at us. In our line of work one does get passes. The fact that men take off their shirts etc is a director's decision and not the star's. But it must be working if it is done so often. Films like Murder worked due to this. On the ramp men do take off the clothes - this thing about women ogling at men it has always happened always - it's not new at all. It is good to have a feminine viewpoint rather than only men having the prerogative to stare at women."

He adds: "It's a good development that women can express their choice why should only men have stag parties? Women should enjoy themselves too. They should have their `hen` parties and discuss men. An ideal male model would be one who looks cool but not conscious about it-the cool, laid back look is in. It is more casual, more physical. He must look good on the runway and in print too. I don't know if the male models physique is seen more today. It was always so except for certain ones like Raymonds. The completely dressed male suits the ad - I've done their ad for over two years and was dressed in a suit. It's just that the ad demands such a look. Today since we're modeling quite a bit on the ramp too it may seem that the male body is seen more."

Opines Dino Morea: "I have been out of modelling for sometime now, and one loses track but from the ads I've seen, I feel it's always been that way- there's always more work for women -now there is equal opportunity for men too and yes I guess it's true that there is more male exposure but it depends on the concept totally. Like for instance 'Live in' jeans which I modeled for had me completely bare bodied. But the modeling industry is down in the dumps today - TV and print work has fallen a hell of a lot. Only a fashion model would be considered top model today, one who does a lot of ramp work. To reach the top you need attitude, good looks plus attitude plus someone the masses can relate to. Modelling has no grooming schools - it is self grooming that matters".

Says John Abraham: " I agree that there is a change of image. You can see it in the kind of contests that I won-the Gladrags contest. Being a model you are a clothes hanger and if the male body is being exploited- I see it positively. I don't feel there's anything wrong with it. If you are a model you have a prototype of a body, show it off-why not? If it is the kind of body that can be showed off why not? Today to reach the top it's not only about how you look but your whole attitude, your personality. You need to have a persona- you need more than just a body and looks. It includes even peripheral stuff that you've done in the past or the kind of work you choose that give you a certain image. I mean one can pick up ten chocolate ads and two wafer ads and say I'm a model but I'd rather pick up a suiting ad and something that portrays me as a man who is desired. I have a choice to decide which ads I want to do-so why pick up something that is low on equity? One works towards reaching out to a particular target audience."
